OpenAI is fundamentally transforming its popular artificial intelligence chatbot into a transactional e-commerce engine with the introduction of a new feature called Instant Checkout. The system allows users to complete purchases from various merchants directly within the ChatGPT interface, eliminating the need to visit a separate website. The feature is initially launching for users in the United States across the platform’s free, Plus, and Pro tiers, marking a significant step in the evolution of conversational AI from an information-retrieval tool to a direct participant in the digital marketplace.

This strategic move leverages ChatGPT’s vast user base, which OpenAI reports as 700 million weekly users, many of whom already use the platform for product discovery and research. By integrating a seamless purchasing mechanism, OpenAI is not only creating a new revenue stream but is also positioning its chatbot as a centralized “AI agent” or digital personal shopper. The system debuts with products from Etsy and is set to expand to over one million merchants using the Shopify platform, with major brands like Glossier, SKIMS, and Vuori also preparing to integrate. A New Protocol for Agentic Commerce

At the core of this new functionality is the Agentic Commerce Protocol, a foundational technology that OpenAI co-developed with Stripe and has released as open-source software. This protocol is designed to create a technical standard for how AI systems can securely and efficiently manage transactions between consumers and businesses. Its primary purpose is to allow an AI, such as ChatGPT, to act as an intermediary—an agent—that passes information between the user and the merchant without taking over the core commercial processes. This architecture ensures that merchants can continue to use their existing systems for vital functions like payment processing, order management, and customer fulfillment.

The protocol’s design allows it to function across different payment processors and diverse business models, promoting broad adoption. When a user decides to buy a product through ChatGPT, the chatbot uses the Agentic Commerce Protocol to forward the encrypted order details to the merchant’s backend system. The merchant then processes this information as it would any other order, using its established provider to handle the payment and its current logistics network to manage fulfillment. This separation of duties is crucial; ChatGPT facilitates the discovery and initiation of the purchase, but the merchant retains ultimate control over the customer relationship and the financial transaction. For businesses that use alternative payment processors, the Agentic Commerce Protocol offers flexible integration paths. These merchants can participate by utilizing Stripe’s Shared Payment Token API or by adopting a different component of the open-source framework known as the Delegated Payments Spec. This flexibility ensures that the protocol is not a closed system but an inclusive standard for the emerging field of AI-driven commerce. From the user’s perspective, the process is designed to be intuitive and integrated directly into the conversational flow of ChatGPT. A user might ask a shopping-related question, such as “what are the best running shoes under US$100” or “ideas for gifts for a ceramics lover.” In response, ChatGPT will present a list of relevant products sourced from across the web. If a product is from a participating merchant and supports Instant Checkout, a “buy” option will appear. Upon tapping this button, the user can confirm their order details and complete the entire transaction without ever leaving the chat window.

For merchants, the system presents a new sales channel that leverages the conversational nature of AI. Businesses pay a fee to OpenAI on completed purchases made through the platform. However, the service carries no direct cost for the end user, and OpenAI asserts that the pricing of products is not affected. A key concern for both consumers and merchants is the integrity of product search results. OpenAI has stated that the availability of Instant Checkout does not influence how products are ranked. Search results will remain “organic and unsponsored, ranked purely on relevance to the user,” a policy aimed at maintaining user trust and ensuring that the most relevant products are surfaced, regardless of their participation in the checkout program.

Security, Privacy, and Data Management

With any new system involving financial transactions, security and data privacy are paramount. OpenAI and Stripe have built several safeguards into the Instant Checkout process. The system requires explicit user confirmation at each stage of a transaction before any action is taken or information is shared.
