The proliferation of generative artificial intelligence is providing criminals with powerful new tools to create scams that are more convincing, personal, and difficult to detect than ever before. Malicious actors are now leveraging AI to generate realistic but entirely fake videos, clone voices from brief audio clips, and write fraudulent emails and messages that are grammatically perfect and tailored to individual targets, leading to a significant increase in successful fraud attempts.

This technological leap has transformed common criminal tactics, moving beyond easily spotted phishing emails to sophisticated, automated, and scalable operations. Scams that once required significant effort can now be deployed en masse with chilling efficiency. From faking a family member’s voice in a call for help to creating deepfake videos of public figures promoting fake investments, AI allows criminals to exploit trust with an unprecedented level of realism, making it crucial for the public to understand and recognize these evolving threats.

The New Face of Deception

One of the most visually potent tools in the AI-scam arsenal is the deepfake, which uses artificial intelligence to create highly realistic but fake videos or photos. Criminals use these techniques to manipulate a person’s likeness, often making them appear to say or do things they never did. This technology has supercharged various forms of fraud by making them appear far more credible. For instance, scammers now generate deepfake videos of celebrities or financial leaders to endorse fake investment opportunities, lending an air of authority to their schemes that can lure in unsuspecting targets.

The application of AI-generated images and videos extends to numerous other scams. In romance scams, criminals use AI to create appealing but entirely fake dating profiles, complete with realistic photos. Another variation is CEO fraud, where a criminal uses a cloned executive’s voice to instruct an employee to make an unauthorized wire transfer. Scammers also use voice clones to try and bypass voice recognition security systems at financial institutions. Experts suggest that a key defense against this is to establish a “safeword” with family members to verify their identity over the phone in a supposed crisis.

Phishing Becomes Hyper-Personalized

For years, the advice for spotting phishing emails was to look for poor spelling and grammar. However, generative AI has made that advice obsolete. Criminals now use AI to produce sophisticated and flawless fraudulent messages, eliminating the errors that were once a key giveaway. These AI-crafted emails and texts appear more legitimate and are therefore more likely to trick recipients into clicking malicious links or divulging sensitive information.

Furthermore, AI enables scammers to personalize these phishing attacks at an unprecedented scale. The technology can automatically scan and scrape data from social media profiles and other online sources to gather specific details about a target, such as their job, friends, family members, or even their pets. This information is then woven into the phishing message to make it uniquely convincing. For example, a scam email might reference a recent trip or a specific project at work to build a false sense of familiarity and trust, significantly increasing the likelihood of a successful attack.

Scaling and Automating Fraudulent Operations

Perhaps the most significant impact of AI on criminal activity is the ability to automate and scale scams with remarkable efficiency. Tasks that once took scammers significant time, such as writing messages or scraping personal information, can now be accomplished in seconds. This allows criminals to launch a higher volume of attacks across multiple channels simultaneously, boosting both their reach and their productivity.

AI-powered chatbots are also being deployed to engage with potential victims, particularly in romance or investment scams. These bots can maintain convincing conversations, saving the scammer time and effort while grooming the target. By automating the initial stages of social engineering, criminals can focus their personal efforts on the final, most critical stages of a scam. This combination of increased sophistication and automation has contributed to a sharp rise in fraud since the widespread availability of generative AI tools.

Emerging Threats and Defensive Measures

The rapid evolution of AI technology continues to create new avenues for fraud and deception. Beyond fake profiles and messages, criminals are using AI to generate original images and videos for fake websites or disinformation campaigns, making it much harder to trace their origins with tools like a reverse image search. This flood of synthetic content erodes trust and complicates the verification of information for ordinary citizens and law enforcement alike. One in three fraud instances involving AI is reportedly successful.

Protecting oneself from these advanced scams requires a new level of vigilance. Experts recommend being inherently skeptical of any urgent request for money or personal information, even if it appears to come from a trusted source. It is critical to verify such requests through a separate communication channel, such as by calling the person back on a known phone number. When on a call, listen for signs of a scam, such as a very short conversation or pressure to act immediately. In an age where seeing and hearing is no longer believing, a cautious and informed approach is the most effective defense.
